The Children's Centre was first created by a group of five honourable women with small children. They were determined to open a centre where preschoolers would be exposed to art, music, storytelling and listening, and as well being introduced to words and numbers. With this planning foundation, they settled their location in a basement space in Cochrane Street church which is where they put their plan into action and first opened the Centre's doors in 1968.
It was known as the Preschool Centre Association for the first five years and operated from a number of different locations including portable classrooms, church basements and private homes. In 1984, the Centre moved to a house on 40 Golf Avenue where we held operations for 26 years. As The Children's Centre was blossoming with a growing number of precious preschoolers, in 2010 we then moved to our current location on 80 Craigmillar Avenue (below St. Mary the Virgin Church).
Over the past 47 years we have built and are continuing to build an archive of photos. Please feel free to stop by the office and have a look through these moments captured in time.
The Children's Centre was built on a strong foundation of quality childcare and we take pride in continuing to do so.
This is a painting created by our very own, Ann Faulkner, of 40 Golf Avenue where The Children's Centre resided for 26 years.
