In the Beginning
In September of 1968, after a lot of work discovering what is needed to provide a developmentally
appropriate, stimulating, pre-school experience, the first Centre opened at Cochrane Street.
At that time it was called The Pre-School Centre Association. It owed its existence to five hard
working and dedicated women: Sharon Buehler, Kay Matthews, June Mongar, Felicity O'Brien, and Pat Wright.
The Centre had at this time, one group for 3-4 year olds and another group for under-3.
In 1971, the Centre included children up to the age of seven, as the core of original children grew older.
New Name
It was felt by parents, staff and children that the name of the Centre needed to change in order to
reflect more accurately the age range now involved. So, in 1973, the name changed to The Children's Centre.

Golf Avenue
For the next ten years, The Children's Centre operated from a succession
of different locations including church basements, portable classrooms,
and private homes, while continuing to look for a "permanent place".
In March of 1984, The Children's Centre moved to Golf Avenue. Around
this time, the Centre became a nursery school/pre-school again.
In December 2009, after 25 years at Golf Avenue, the Centre moved
to its present location at St. Mary's Church on Craigmiller Avenue.
2007
Over four decades later, our Centre is still going strong thanks
to parents' continuing support for our creative, child-centred approach
to learning. Pat Wright, one of the founders of The Children's Centre,
has said, "I can walk in there today and find the same atmosphere
and the same environment as when we first started it."
